Services for Families
Our credo is a quote from L.M. Bujold; "The dead cannot cry out for justice; it is a duty of the living to do so for them". We have served families for decades by providing them the only things we know of that can help: compassion and the truth. Through these values we assist families in getting the closure they need.
We offer an array of services to families, all of which can be customized to the questions you would like answered and the concerns you have. When a loved one dies, it is a time of great upheaval. An autopsy can help you understand the loss of your loved one, as well as any genetic or inherited diseases that they may have passed on. In this way, an autopsy is not just about the health of the deceased, but about the health of the whole family.
People sometimes ask, why an autopsy? What will it show? Studies consistently show that 40 percent of all autopsies reveal findings that were not suspected before death, and 15 percent reveal findings that would have changed the course of treatment had the attending doctor known of it before death. Substantial findings are discovered, and not at all infrequently; making the autopsy the ultimate measure of quality of care.
We also find families want to have an autopsy done for peace of mind: that is to put to rest any lingering questions. Additionally, sometimes families want autopsies done for potential litigation. An autopsy is an important thing to have done if this is even a remote possibility, as any experienced wrongful death attorney will tell you. Without an autopsy, a wrongful death case can become a dispute about how a person died and what the cause of death was. After a loved one has been interred, it becomes very difficult both legally, emotionally, and financially to exhume them to have an autopsy done later.
Regional Pathology and Autopsy Services, LLC is a family-run business. From our family to yours, we understand these are difficult questions when you are grieiving for a lost loved one. There are many things to consider, and if you are considering an autopsy, contact us, and we will be glad to answer any questions you have and guide you through the process, so you get the information you need.
Partial or Complete Autopsies
When we lose a loved one, there is a lot of confusion. There are times when we understand why a loved one passed, and the cause of and circumstances surrounding death is clear. But often, questions surround a loved ones passing which troubles us and raises questions which we need answers to, for our own peace of mind. An autopsy is a crucial tool in allowing families to know the truth about their loved ones death. Autopsies also provide vital information about genetic, inheritable diseases and conditions which effect the health of the whole family, and are often needed in cases which may go into litigation. Our staff works with the family to schedule the autopsy so as not to interfere with funeral arrangements, and we have a final autopsy report available within 30 days complete. An autopsy includes a detailed examination, description, and evaluation of all organs and organ systems as well as microscopic tissue analysis. We work with you to ensure that the questions you have get answered. The Next of Kin may request an autopsy for any reason. Reasons we frequently encounter to request an autopsy include but are not limited to:
* Determination of cause of death if unknown, uncertain or questioned
* Documentation and evaluation on inheritable, genetic conditions
* Evaluation of quality of health care treatment
* Extent of disease processes
* Sudden, or unexpected deaths
* Exposure to toxic chemicals or materials
* Litigation, worker's compensation, insurance, etc.
* Cases of possible Medical malpractice or wrongful death
* Dementia or other neurological condition
* Fetal autopsy for inborn or acquired conditions
* Confirming or refuting clinical findings
* Cancer deaths
* Unclear or unexplained symptoms or conditions
Our experts can help tailor services to your specific questions and concerns. Whatever the case, we have the experience to serve you. See bottom of page for pricing.
Notes on Exhumation Autopsies.
Partial Autopsy Options:
Cardiovascular Autopsy--If the main concern surrounds the heart and lungs, then this may be an appropriate option.
Single Organ Autopsy--When the main concern is only one organ, we are able to focus the examination to that organ.
Tumor Tissue Examination--For cases where it is desired that we remove tumor in order to diagnose and document what the disease was, this is often a desired service. This allows us to detect and document the disease's spread.
Brain-Only Autopsy
Many neurological (brain) diseases can only be conclusively diagnosed at autopsy. While clinically there may be signs of dementia or brain injury, the actual determination of the disease causing that process remains a tissue diagnosis at autopsy. Despite advances in imaging and clinical testing, an autopsy is the "gold standard" for diagnosing a wide range of conditions including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other conditions. Often, families want a brain autopsy in order to understand the disease as they are sometimes an inherited condition. We understand that losing a loved one to dementia is a unique and confusing process.
We offer brain-only autopsies which are evaluated by a pathologist that specializes in brain diseases. This service allows definitive diagnosis of the disease.This is a appropriate option in cases of dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Supranuclear Palsy, Neurodegenative Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington's Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, Pick's Disease, and several other organic brain diseases. We also can examine cases for traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. A complete detailed report with a letter explaining in lay terms the findings is generated within 45 days. See bottom of page for pricing.
Post Mortem Toxicology Specimen Procurement
We are able to remove appropriate specimens for toxicology testing, screening and evaluation. This service includes removal and storage of the specimens only (if an autopsy or other procedure is also performed, a discounted fee is available). We can either forward the specimens to a lab of your choice or use our local toxicology lab. See bottom of page for pricing.
Post Mortem DNA Specimen Procurement
This service involves removal of appropriate specimens for DNA analysis, including blood, lymph nodes, hair, and bone marrow. This option is appropriate for cases of paternity testing. The specimen is sent to the lab of the family's choice for testing. See bottom of page for pricing.
